Computer hacking has become a major threat to everyone and every institution. Many of us have been hit personally by viruses, developed by hackers, that destroy our personal computers. Businesses have had their computer networks disrupted and critical information compromised. Department of Homeland Security calls the threat a “nightmare.”¹ The typical approach to an attack is to: discovering information about the intended target; then, identify ways of attack; then, attempt to compromise the system by employing one or more of the ways of attack.
Computer security is typically built around three processes: prevention, detection and response. Prevention can be achieved as easily as using good passwords and other user account access controls. Encrypting data is another tool used to prevent a successful hack. Firewalls are the most common prevention system for networks.
IDS’s or Intrusion Detection Systems are used to detect attacks in progress and assist in tracking down the source of the attack. Audit trails and logs provide similar tools for individual systems.
Response is dictated by the security requirements of the system. The range of responses can be from simple upgrades of the computer security system to notification of legal authorities of the break-in.
